The Grand Illumination Parade, taking place on the Saturday before Thanksgiving, is the annual celebration in downtown Norfolk and Olde Towne Portsmouth. Thousands of people fill the streets to create beautiful holiday memories. The event features more than 70 units, like colorful floats, marching bands, motorized units, walking units, and, finally, Santa Claus himself.

Schedule & Route

The procession is set to kick off at 7 pm, with the participants gathering for staging at Harbor Park. The event starts at the corner of St. Paul’s Blvd. and Main Street, following a 2-mile (3-km) route through historic downtown Norfolk. The procession turns north from Main Street to Granby Street, then turns west to Freemason Street. Then, the crowd moves along Boush Street, turns onto Waterside Drive, and makes their final stop at the corner of S. Paul's Boulevard and Waterside Drive. The festivities are expected to last until 10:30 pm.

Parade Entertainment

With this year's theme being "Retro Wonderland," the parade spectators are sure to witness a mesmerizing sight of nostalgic Christmas characters, classic festive floats, Santa Clauses, and much more. High school marching bands will perform Christmas hits, while cars adorned with flowers and Christmas lights will greet citizens. In addition to the traditional illumination of downtown Norfolk, you can expect plenty of family-friendly activities, festive food, drinks, music, and art.

Parking spaces for The Grand Illumination Parade are available at downtown garages, including MacArthur Center, Dominion Tower Garage, and PNC Garage. Rates vary from $5 to $20, depending on the parking lot. During special events, discounted parking rates may apply.

The Grand Illumination Parade attendees can arrive around 5 pm to enjoy discounted admission to the Winterfest at the Nauticus maritime-themed science center. The annual Annual Great Hot Cocoa War kicks off Downtown Norfolk’s Grand Illumination celebration with tons of marshmallows, hot cocoa, and plenty of shopping and dining. Visitors can try all the delicious cocoas Norfolk can offer, choose a winner, and vote to participate in the competition, which lasts for the whole week.
