Del Mar Racing Season 2024 in San Diego

Even if you are not a fan of horse races, visiting Del Mar Race Track is a bucket list activity in San Diego. Located about 30 km north of the city, the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club racetrack is located in the town of Del Mar on the coast of the Pacific ocean. With a capacity of 44,000 people, it is the second largest horse-racing track on the West Coast after Santa Anita Park. The slogan of this racing track built in 1937 is "Where The Turf Meets The Surf", and it truly is blessed with the perfect location.

Del Mar History

Del Mar Thoroughbred Club opened in 1937. In 1938, it became famous thanks to the Seabiscuit-Ligaroti match race, which attracted 20,000 spectators and an impressive audience on the radio. In the 1940s, Del Mar served as a summer playground for many Hollywood big names, and by the 1960s it became one of the premier racetracks in the country. In 1991, it hosted its greatest race - the $1,000,000 Grade I Pacific Classic Stakes.

The Opening Day (July 20, 2024)

One of the major events at Del Mar is The Opening Day, with its glamorous contests and parties, which happen every year in mid-July. The Opening Day is not just for betting on horses but also for fashion and style. It's common to wear a hat to the racetrack on this day, and many participate in the famous Opening Day Hats Contest. After the races, the public continues to celebrate the start of the racing season at various social events, like The Party presented by Pacifico. The Del Mar Racing Season runs from mid-July into early September. But apart from that, the racetrack hosts many other events like concerts and shows.

Tickets

The Opening Day tickets with seats are $75 - $80. Trackside tables and dining options are available. General admission tickets, providing trackside access to the seaside oval on Opening Day, are $50. Opening Day VIP ticket is $400. It includes a complimentary buffet & hosted bar, exclusive celebrity grill access, and paddock-facing open seating, Tickets to The Party, presented by Pacifico, with world-class DJs, craft beers & cocktail bars, photo booths, and private wagering are $75. Opening Day events also include the After Pony Party at Rancho Valencia with DJ Murphi and much more. General admission to the racetrack after the Opening Day is $8.
