One of the most prestigious events in the art world, the Biennale di Venezia, takes place every other year. It includes the main art exhibition and several other events for dance, architecture, cinema and theatre. In fact, the Venetian Biennale is the original event that is a model for other Biennales around the world.
Biennale di Venezia is focused mainly on contemporary visual art and unlike other large-scale art events isn't a commercial event or a marketplace partly because of the sales ban that was enacted in 1968. The main exhibition of the Biennale takes place at Giardini (Park) where participating countries construct one Central and 29 national pavilions. The rest of the works are shown in different venues around the city.
