Bore Tide in Alaska 2025
A unique natural phenomenon that offers great opportunities to surfers and kayakers
Best time: March | September
This tidal phenomenon produces considerable waves in long narrow channels when the incoming tide meets with the outgoing. There are just a few places in the world where you can observe how it happens. Turnagain Arm near Anchorage is one of them. Boral tide can be seen here every day, but usually, the waves are rather modest. If you want to see the most impressive bore tide, come in spring or fall. Tides are the greatest at the equinoxes in March and September. If you like surfing, you can try to ride these huge waves, which sometimes reach 12 m. But remember that they are rather dangerous, so this activity is only for experienced athletes.
