Magnetic Hill in India 2025
Mystery or optical illusion? The best way to find out the truth is to visit the Magnetic Hill yourself
Best time: June–October
The Magnet Hill of Ladakh is a popular attraction located on the Leh-Kargil-Baltik national highway at the height of 4267 m above sea level. This mysterious gravity hill draws people from all over the world. Everyone is curious to try the secret physical phenomenon by themselves. It is believed that various vehicles can roll uphills drawn by some magnetic power. Even aircraft increase their altitude over this region to avoid magnetic interference.
You can come here, turn off the engine of your car and observe the mysterious power drawing your vehicle uphill on speed up to 20 kph. It seems like this hill is breaking the laws of physics. So, what really happens? Magnetic Hill is one big optical illusion. As the horizon in this place is almost completely obstructed, it's hard to understand the appearance of the surface. The slope which looks like going up is actually a downhill slope. So, when you turn off the engine, your car is slowly rolling downhill. Come and experience this phenomenon. Believe in tales about the magnet power, or try to see the way the slope really goes. It's odd and difficult for your eyes to catch the real picture, but anyway it's an interesting and unique experience for everyone.
As the Magnetic Hill is located on the Srinagar–Leh highway (close to Leh), it is accessible only June through October due to the heavy snowfall (November–May).
