Mongolian Kazakhs celebrate the new year at the spring equinox, in Nauryz which is the local name for March. Locals do their best to settle all their disagreements, pay back all their debts, and what is the most important—to fill all the vessels at home with milk, airan yogurt, spring water, and various grains. All that is done to ensure a bountiful harvest for the coming year. Tradition dictates that one has to be as kind and generous as possible, for the sake of a happy coming year. Thus, the occasion seems to be the best time to visit Bayan Ulgii province, the home of most Mongolian Kazakhs.
