For centuries women of color were forced to hide their naturally curly hair that was not welcome by social and office dress codes. Luckily, it is changing now. CURLFEST New York, which takes place every July at Randall’s Island Park in New York City, celebrates everything about African American beauty. It is more than just another festival since it creates a safe space for women of color to be seen, heard, and represented.
The festival runs from 12 pm to 7 pm. A ticket is required to attend. You can purchase a Weekend Combo Ticket that includes admission to CURLFEST NYC and CURLFEST Roller Set the following day. Ticket cost ranges from $30 to $49.
CURLFEST NYC annually attracts about 35,000 attendees and participants from over 32 countries. It is organized by Curly Girl Collective, an experiential marketing group founded in 2011 that has become a pioneer in the natural hair movement. The group curates experiences that connect multicultural women with brands, plans several innovative events driving buzz, and finds influencers in African American beauty. Curly Girl Collective's mission is to make sure that women with naturally textured hair feel beautiful and appreciated.
The Fest features a Beauty Row where women can enjoy unique experiences with their favorite brands, CURLFEST Marketplace hosting dozens of artisans and designers, and food trucks with a variety of international cuisines. Entertainment includes Empowerment Stage featuring empowering voices in black culture, Main Stage with live bands and DJs, and the Arts District with a silent auction and paintings that come to life.
