The first Shanghai International Film Festival took place in 1993. Now it is considered to be a window showing the Chinese films to the world. This is also the place where young Chinese filmmakers can present themselves to the audience and make their name known.
The opening ceremony that brings together famous local and foreign film stars is usually the highlight of the event. The program is divided into four sections: Film Competition—classic part where the best film is awarded (the main prize is the Golden Goblet Award), SIFF Mart—the platform where the movies are sold by producers to distributors, Film Forum—future development conference, and International Film Panorama—the conference for producers from all over the world, whose movies do not take part in the main competition.
This a perfect place where you can understand Chinese culture from inside and watch original movies with English subtitles. This is also a really popular event so be sure to get the tickets in advance.
