The Torino Film Festival, also known as the Turin Film Festival or TFF, is a prestigious international event held annually in Turin, Italy. Taking place every November in the National Cinema Museum, it ranks as the second-largest film festival in Italy. Renowned globally for its dedication to independent filmmaking and personal vision, the festival is celebrated for its extensive retrospectives. Torino Film Festival has established itself as a vital platform for both emerging talents and established filmmakers worldwide.

Awards

The Torino Film Festival features a variety of competitive and non-competitive sections that showcase the best in contemporary cinema. In the International Features Competition, films compete for awards such as Best Film, with a prize of 18,000.00 euros, and the Special Jury Award, valued at 7,000.00 euros. Additional awards include Best Actress, Best Actor, and Best Screenplay. The International Documentaries Competition offers recognition for Best Film, with a prize of 10,000.00 euros and a Special Jury Award. Similarly, the International Shorts Competition awards Best Film with 2,000.00 euros, along with a Special Jury Award.

Sections

Beyond these competitions, the festival includes non-competitive sections such as Torino 35, which highlights both international feature films and documentaries. Festa Mobile presents the most compelling productions of the year, while After Hours focuses on genre films like horror, science fiction, and film noir. Onde showcases innovative and experimental works unrestricted by length, format, or medium. TFFdoc is dedicated to documentaries featuring separate international and Italian competitions, as well as special screenings. Italiana.corti is a competition exclusively for Italian short films. The festival also includes tributes, retrospectives, and special screenings, making it a comprehensive celebration of cinema in all its forms.

2024 Edition

The 42nd Torino Film Festival (42TFF) will commence at the illustrious Teatro Regio. This glamorous event will feature the premiere screening of an international film accompanied by esteemed national and international guests. The festival's program will showcase a total of 120 films across six sections. It includes four competitive sections: the main competition with 16 world or international premieres, the documentary competition featuring 16 Italian premieres, the short film competition presenting 24 European premieres, and the "Leopardian" Zibaldone offering 24 titles of various genres without constraints. Additionally, there are two non-competitive sections: one with 16 out-of-competition titles and a retrospective honoring Marlon Brando with 24 films.

History of Torino Film Festival

Established in 1982 as the International Youth Film Festival, the Torino Film Festival was founded by Gianni Rondolino and Ansano Giannarelli. It quickly became known for its emphasis on critical thinking and film language evolution. Under Rondolino's leadership, the festival fostered close ties with AIACE (the Movie Club) and showcased influential retrospectives like the French New Wave and New German Cinema. The Torino Film Festival has been led by a notable lineup of directors, including Alberto Barbera, Stefano della Casa, Giulia D'Angelo, Roberto Turigliatto, Nanni Moretti, Gianni Amelio, and Paolo Virzì. Starting in 2024, Giulio Base will assume the role of director, continuing the festival's legacy of showcasing diverse and innovative cinematic experiences.
