The Trento Film Festival, also known as the Mountain Festival, is the oldest international film festival focused on mountains, adventure, and exploration. For over seventy years, it has been the go-to event for these topics, evolving into a platform for new ideas about the world's highest places. The festival now covers a wide range of interests, including environmental, cultural, and current issues, making its program diverse and engaging. The Trento Film Festival features over 120 films and more than 130 events across more than 40 venues.
Programme
In addition to the films, documentaries, and short films competing for awards, the festival features mountaineering meetings, debates, theater and music performances, special event evenings, and round tables. These activities turn Trento into the international capital of the mountains, offering a vibrant and diverse program that extends beyond the screen.
Literature
The international showcase dedicated to mountain publishing has become one of the most popular and diverse events during the Trento Film Festival . It features around a thousand newly published books for visitors to explore and includes a program of meetings with some of the most renowned and popular authors.
Awards
Each year, the international competition at the festival showcases the best documentaries, fiction, and short films set in the mountains and extreme areas of the Earth. These films compete for the prestigious Gentian awards, which are given by a jury of prominent figures from the worlds of film, culture, and mountaineering. The festival features various sections that explore the captivating and intricate relationship between humans and nature. It promotes environmental awareness and protection, delves into connections with different peoples and cultures, and celebrates both major and minor achievements in climbing and mountain sports.
Events
After the main event concludes, the Trento Film Festival embarks on a year-long tour across Italy. The festival’s captivating experiences continue through film screenings and numerous events organized in partnership with national and international organizations, cultural associations, and commercial entities. This allows audiences to relive the emotions and highlights of the festival throughout the entire year.
Venues
With each passing edition, Piazza Duomo, Piazza Cesare Battisti, the Teatro Sociale, Piazza Fiera, and the streets of the historic city center have become renowned stages for some of the most prominent figures in global mountaineering.
History of Trento Film Festival
In its over 70 editions, the festival has continually expanded its artistic scope and content. The inaugural edition of 'The Mountain Film Festival City of Trento' in 1952 featured films from seven countries. Today, the festival includes 12 sections showcasing works from around the globe on the theme of 'mountains and cultures.' It honors the best entries with the prestigious 'Golden Gentian' award and numerous special prizes.
