Up to 10,000 runners gather to run the 10 km distance that starts and finishes at Avenida da Liberdade—one of the central streets of Lisbon. Hence, the race is not only a good option for improving your health but also an alternative way to check out the beauty of the city.
There is a separate race for children that takes place a bit earlier than a race for adults—São Silvestre da Pequenada. Depending on the age category kids run 300, 500, 700, 1000 meters: the younger are kids, the shorter distance they run.
For about two hours the centre of the city is occupied but the runners are expected to finish the distance in 120 minutes as after this time traffic resumes.
When the race is over, each child receives a diploma and a medal as no winner is awarded. For adults, there are no money prizes but every year sponsors come up with some rewarding gifts to congratulate the winners.
