Mount Vernon Trail in Washington, D.C. 2025
Combine active outdoor sports with a visit to George Washington's historical estate
Best time: April–October
One of the most popular trails for hiking, biking, and running stretches for 27 km from the legendary George Washington Estate to Theodore Roosevelt Island. It follows the Potomac's shoreline and connects with some other trails, such as the Rock Creek Trail or the Woodrow Wilson Bridge Trails. You'll enjoy great views of the Potomac and Washington's neighbourhoods and landmarks, like Old Town Alexandria or Arlington Cemetry. The Mount Vernon Trail is open year round, but it can get rather slippery in the winter, so it's better to explore it during the warm time of the year.
