Fiestas de San Pacho

Every late September, the twelve Afro-Caribbean Franciscan districts of Quibdó, Colombia, come alive with the vibrant Fiesta de San Pacho, or Festival of Saint Francis of Assisi. This celebration honors the community's Afro-descendant Chocó identity, deeply rooted in popular religion. Visitors to the festival can immerse themselves in a rich tapestry of Catholic and African traditions, experiencing colorful processions, flag ceremonies, firework displays, and lively street parties. Throughout the festivities, one can admire the multitude of flags and traditional costumes, adding to the dynamic atmosphere of this cultural extravaganza.

Schedule of Events

Each morning during the Fiesta de San Pacho, the people of Quibdó come together for the Franciscan mass, a sacred tradition that sets the tone for the day's festivities. As the afternoon unfolds, the spirit of liberation takes center stage through dance. At the same time, theater performances shed light on the struggles of daily life and the historical discrimination faced by the Afro-descendant population. The San Francis of Assisi Band fills the air with the infectious rhythms of traditional dances and chirimía music, captivating audiences with their energetic performances.

Parade

A highlight of the festival is the colorful parade of carnival groups, showcasing elaborate costumes, vibrant dances, and lively chirimía music. Each district adds its own unique flair to the festivities, offering morning masses and presenting allegorical floats and carnival groups in the afternoon, creating a dynamic and engaging celebration of culture and community.

The procession

On October 3rd, the patron saint travels the Atrato River by boat, followed by devotional hymns at dawn on October 4th. In the afternoon, the Grand Procession of the Saint takes place. Local artisans create floats, district altars, costumes, and decorations, with young people learning alongside. Families in each district safeguard the festival's traditions, working with the Franciscan Festival Foundation to organize events and preserve the heritage.
