The Braemar Gathering is maybe the most famous event from the Highland Games circuit. The Gathering takes place every year on the first Saturday of September and attracts crowds from all corners of the world. Moreover, there are also a couple of guests attending the Gathering, most notable among them are the members of the Royal family.

The Massed Bands Parade

The games at the Braemar Gathering commence with the resonating sound of pipe bands. The Massed Bands parade, beginning at 11:30 am from the Invercauld Arms Hotel, winds its way through the village to Princess Royal and Duke of Fife Memorial Park, the site of the Gathering. Later, at 3 pm, the bands parade once more, this time from Auchendryne Square. Additionally, individual Pipe Bands will make their processions through the village at various times throughout the day.

Events & Activities

The Braemar Gathering begins promptly at 9 am and continues until 5 pm, offering a full day of vibrant activities. Attendees can enjoy Massed Pipe Bands, Heavy events, Highland Dancing, Tug-o'-War, Track and Field, and Solo Piping. These events reflect the rich culture and heritage of the Highland Gathering in Scotland. As the day draws to a close, the King himself presents the prestigious cups and shields, marking the culmination of a memorable day of camaraderie and celebration.

Throughout the day, various local food suppliers will be present on-site, offering hot meals and refreshments. Additionally, there will be a beer tent available, though proof of age may be necessary. Visitors also have the option to explore a range of local cafes, tea rooms, and restaurants in Braemar. To ensure a seamless dining experience, it's advisable to make reservations in advance whenever possible.

Tickets & Location

General Admission tickets to the historic Braemar Gathering are £15 for adults and £5 for children under 14. For a closer view, Seated Tickets start at £25, with a family package available for £50. The Braemar Gathering is held in The Princess Royal and Duke of Fife Memorial Park in Braemar.

History of Braemar Gathering

The Braemar Gathering, with roots tracing back to King Malcolm Canmore's era, has been held since 1832. Organized by the Braemar Highland Society, it gained Royal status in 1866. Attended regularly by the reigning Monarch and Royal Family since 1848, it features the world's oldest foot races. Her Majesty the Queen, patron of the Braemar Games, cheered on participants annually from the nearby Balmoral estate, fostering a tradition of skill and celebration in the quaint village of Braemar.
