Tsagaan Suvarga, also known as the White Stupa, is a striking geological formation located in Ulziit District, Dundgovi Province, Mongolia. The site features dramatic limestone and clay cliffs shaped by erosion over millions of years. According to researchers, this area was once the seabed of an ancient ocean, and its layered rock formations reflect its geological history.

Visiting Conditions

Tsagaan Suvarga is accessible to visitors without an entrance fee. Travelers can visit independently or as part of an organized tour. There are no official operating hours, but it is recommended to visit during daylight for safety and visibility.

Best Time to Visit

The ideal time to visit Tsagaan Suvarga is between May and September, when temperatures are moderate. Late August to early September is considered optimal, as the weather is mild and the number of visitors decreases. For those visiting in late September, the Ikh Goviin Temee (Camels of Great Gobi) Festival takes place in the region. The event features camel races, camel polo, and showcases local nomadic traditions.

Activities at Tsagaan Suvarga

Visitors can explore the cliffs and surrounding landscape by hiking along designated paths, offering panoramic views that are particularly stunning at sunrise and sunset when the rock formations change color.

Additionally, there are several points of interest nearby. Khevtee Bosoo Agui, also known as Lie and Stand Cave, is located 4.3 miles (7 km) east of Tsagaan Suvarga and is a 50-meter-long cave where visitors may need to crawl in some sections while being able to walk upright in others.

Del Uul, or Back Mountain, situated about 10 miles (17 km) south of the White Stupa, features ancient rock carvings with thousands of petroglyphs and archaeological remains dating back to the Bronze Age. For a unique experience, local families offer camel rides, generally costing around $10-$15 for a 30-minute ride.

The site is suitable for families with children, but caution is advised due to the steep cliffs and strong winds. Pets are generally allowed, but it is recommended to keep them on a leash due to the rugged terrain and potential encounters with local wildlife.

Getting There

Tsagaan Suvarga is located approximately 97 miles (156 km) from Mandalgovi, the capital of Dundgovi Province, and about 261 miles (420 km) from Ulaanbaatar. Visitors can reach the site by private vehicle or as part of a guided tour. The road conditions vary, with some sections being paved and others consisting of rough dirt tracks. There is no direct public transportation to the site.
