Bighorn Sheep in Yellowstone National Park 2025
Check out the bighorns on the slopes of the mountains
Best time: May–June | November
The bighorn sheep are mainly found in the northern part of the Park. Around 13 bands and over 300 bighorn sheep can be seen in this territory. Mount Everts and Gardner Canyon has the biggest concentration of these animals.
During summer season bighorns can be seen on the slopes of Mount Washburn and along Dunraven Pass. Bighorn sheep weigh from 80 to 135 kg, and their horns can weigh up to 20 kg. Throughout summer they grow the most. The horns influence the rank and the dominance inside the band, especially during the mating season.
The rut begins in November, and this is the time to see impressive fights, especially when two rams have the same size horns. Lambs are born in May and June.
