Stories of Diocletian 2024 in Croatia
In Split, do as Romans do during a colorful carnival at Diocletian Palace
Dates: August 29–31, 2024
Emperor Diocletian's palace is a true landmark of Split and the whole of Croatia, open to visitors during the whole year. However, only in August, you can see a modern city transform into an ancient settlement. During the colorful carnival called Stories of Diocletian (formerly Days of Diocletian), you'll witness passers-by walking around in togas and tunics. Roman carriages and wagons pass through narrow streets of the 1,700-old city. In the palace, Emperor Diocletian addresses his citizens. And, of course, there will be numerous opportunities to shop for Roman souvenirs and crafts.
Festival Program
If you want to immerse yourself in the days of the Roman Empire, the event's schedule has a lot to offer. The festival begins with a profound performance, "Togas & Tetrarchs," which will take you on a journey through time. This ceremony takes place on the first day of the event at 8 am.
The second day of the festivities continues with Diocletian choosing his wife Prisca among the lucky spectators, who will stand before the crowd in the central square of the palace, usually at noon. From 1 pm until 7 pm, festival visitors can take a picture while sitting on the renowned emperor's throne, as part of "A Memory of Imperial Split" program. They also can learn more about the city and its expansion during the Roman Empire. At 8 pm, visitors can witness a glorious Roman March with costumed soldiers and courtesans. The event is followed by a choreographed performance of Roman soldiers as part of the "Quod sumus hoc eritis" event at 8:30 pm.
The event's final day promises more historical reenactments from Diocletian and a fascinating tour throughout his palace. At noon, a lucky spectator is again chosen, this time to perform the role of Diocletian. At 12:15 pm, groups will be led through the Historical Complex of Split with the Palace of Diocletian. At the Temple of Jupiter, there is an annual show displaying the significance of Croatia's heritage, while at Peristil, you'll have a chance to witness the daily routines of Roman Empire soldiers.
Change of Diocletian's Roman Guard (May 1-September 27, 2024)
Another event related to the Stories of Diocletian celebration takes place every day at noon, starting from May until the middle of October. The ceremony unfolds at Peristil Square at 12 pm and features greetings from Diocletian and his wife and the change of guard, a solemn custom worth witnessing.
