Emperor Diocletian's palace is a true landmark of Split and the whole of Croatia, open to visitors during the whole year. However, only in August, you can see how a modern city transforms into an ancient settlement. During the colorful carnival called Stories of Diocletian (formerly Days of Diocletian), you'll witness passers-by walking around in togas and tunics. Roman carriages and wagons pass through narrow streets of the city that is about 1,700 years old. In the palace, Emperor Diocletian addresses his citizens. And, of course, there will be numerous opportunities to shop for Roman souvenirs and crafts.
