Aperschnalzen 2025 in Austria
A custom of whip cracking used to drive winter away
Dates: late January–early March
Aperschnalzen—is an authentic tradition in Salzburg and Bavaria, which is believed to drive out winter and awaken the spirit of nature. Usually held at the end of January or the beginning of February, it draws young men to take part in the competition.
Festival Customs
The main attraction is the skilful usage of whips, up to 13-feet (4 m) long, called "Goal." Snapping and cracking, amazing coordination—this is what competitors show. From 7 to 11 members can take part simultaneously so long as the number is uneven. This fascinating old tradition attracts lots of locals and tourists as well. It's believed that the act of whipping helps draw away winter and welcome spring, which is why "aper" in the name Aperschnalzen means "free of snow".
Aperschalzen Dates
The dates vary from town to town, with some villages and cities hosting Aperschnalzen in late January while others hold this event in February. The city of Ainring is set to host its annual Aperschnalzen competition on February 22nd-23rd at 12 pm and 11 am, respectively. The event is set to take place at Sporthalle Ainring. The region of Rupertiwinkel is practically the only region in Bavaria, where you'll have a chance to witness this display. The Aperschalzen season there begins on St. Stephen's Day, December 26th and lasts until Shrove Tuesday, usually early March or late February.
