Strathaven Balloon Festival Featured in
The Strathaven Balloon Festival is held in August in the Award-winning Strathaven Park, some 25 mi (40 km) southeast of Glasgow. A weekend of free festivities for all the family draws around 30,000 visitors annually. The event is known as the only hot air balloon festival in Scotland. What's more, this celebration is among the UK's top three ballooning events, attracting pilots from all over Europe.
The program of the Strathaven Balloon Festival has all sorts of entertainment, with a focus on ballooning. Hot air balloon launches, scheduled for 6 am and 6 pm, are weather-permitting, and so are the tethered balloon rides. In addition, a spectacular evening balloon glow takes place at 9 pm on Saturday. Plus, you can enjoy other amusements, including music, dancers, a fun fair, and food stalls. Find more information on the official website (see External Resources below).
Strathaven's festival of ballooning started in 1999. It was greatly supported by Don Cameron, a ballooner from Glasgow and the founder of Cameron Balloons, the world's largest manufacturer of hot air balloons. Today, the festival is managed by the Strathaven Balloon Festival Committee. This non-profit voluntary organization works hard to cover the costs of the event. So despite free admission, donations are appreciated. Also, you can buy the Souvenir Program for £3 or get a raffle ticket and potentially win a flight in a balloon or other prizes.
