Hudson Hot Air Affair 2025 in Wisconsin
The premier winter ballooning event in the Midwest
Dates: February 7–9, 2025
Hudson Hot Air Affair is an annual balloon rally and winter festival held on the first weekend of February. The event takes place in the town of Hudson, Wisconsin, gathering thousands of visitors from the surrounding area, as well as pilots from other states. The highlights include a costumed torchlight parade, fireworks, kite flying, ice carving, and the Moon Glow or Field of Fire, a breathtaking sight of tethered hot air balloons illuminating the night. Although the details for the 2025 edition are yet to be announced, let's take a glimpse back at the 2024 festivities since the organizers promise that many of the favorites will return.
2024 Festival
The 35th annual Hudson Hot Air Affair took place February 2-4, 2024, under the theme "Rockin' with the Coldies." Despite the winter chill, attendees enthusiastically embraced the festivities amidst colorful hot air balloons. The event attracted around 30 balloonists from across five states, who converged in Hudson to share the thrill and spectacle of hot air ballooning.
Events and Activities
Throughout the weekend, spectators gathered at the launch field at E.P. Rock School to witness the breathtaking mass ascensions at 7:35 am on both mornings of the weekend and an additional one at 3 pm on Saturday. The fun did not stop there. Visitors had the opportunity to mingle with pilots, witness balloon inflations up close, and immerse themselves in the festive atmosphere. Kids had a blast at the Kids Ice Fishing event held under the pavilion in the parking lot at Carbone's Pizzeria in Burkhardt. Meanwhile, furry friends found love at Puppy Speed Dating, hosted by Coco's Heart Dog Rescue for a Be Mine Fur-ever Adoption Event at Angel's Pet World.
History enthusiasts explored the Octagon House Museum during its open house, delving into local Hudson history and marveling at Civil War Era artifacts from the museum's collection. With fish-related games, educational activities, puppy cuddles, and historical insights, last year's events offered something for everyone to enjoy.
Admission
The festival usually offers a mix of free and paid options. Spectacular balloon events, including mass ascensions and displays, are free for all to enjoy, alongside other spectator events like the torchlight parade, fireworks, kite flying, and ice carving. While some activities, such as the smoosh board competition or fundraiser prize drop, are free to watch, participation may require a fee. Throughout the community, there are both free and paid events, such as the kids' ice fishing, Hudson Booster Bingo fundraiser, and Octagon House Museum tours.
Parking
Parking is available on one side of the streets surrounding the school grounds, ensuring better traffic flow and pedestrian safety. For the Hudson Hot Air Affair 2024, limited handicapped parking was accessible in the school's central lot, with additional options at Newton Field, Mt. Zion Lutheran Church, and Hudson United Methodist Church. Due to the event's popularity, heavy traffic is expected for next year's edition. Hence, the organizers prompt attendees to arrive early and park several blocks away if necessary.
History
Hudson Hot Air Affair was founded in 1990 through the Hudson Area Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Bureau. Over the years, the festival has become a signature annual event for the St. Croix Valley community in west central Wisconsin.
