Dunster Winter Festival 2024 in England
The medieval village lights its streets with soft candles, lanterns, and torches
Dates: December 7–8, 2024
The Dunster Winter Festival is the new name for a festival that carries on the traditions of the beloved Dunster by Candlelight, a popular annual event that ushers in the holiday spirit. Set in the beautifully preserved medieval village of Dunster, the festival transforms the village into a warm, glowing celebration of the past. Visitors can enjoy a range of activities, including music, theater, art and craft workshops, medieval-themed entertainment, and craft stalls, offering a magical experience steeped in history and festive cheer.
2024 Edition
The Dunster Winter Festival has been significantly impacted by Storm Darragh, leading to the cancellation of most planned activities. Unfortunately, all outdoor entertainment, the Christmas Market in the Tithe Barn, the wreath-making workshops, and children’s activities hosted by Homestart at the National Park Centre have been called off.
Despite these setbacks, a few highlights are still going ahead. The Medieval Beliefs Talk by Brian Hoggard will take place on Saturday, and the festival’s grand finale—the sold-out concert by the Medieval Baebes—is scheduled for Sunday at St. George’s Church at 2:30 PM. Before the concert, the Medieval Baebes, accompanied by the Wessex Medieval Alliance, will process from the Yarn Market at 1:55 PM to the church, offering a unique and captivating spectacle.
Usual Events
The highlight of the Dunster Winter Festival is the lantern lighting procession, along with a dramatic soldiers' procession featuring torches and drums, both of which begin after dark. Visitors can also get involved in various activities, including workshops where they can learn skills from talented local craftspeople and enjoy captivating storytelling sessions. One of the festival's standout performances is the Bowlore Flaming Swords, a thrilling medieval re-enactment by the Sutton Household, a 15th-century living history and re-enactment troupe that brings the past to life with fiery swordplay.

History of the Dunster Winter Festival
Dunster by Candlelight, which began in 1986 with the support of local traders, came to an end in 2023 when the organizing committee decided to discontinue the event. To carry on the cherished traditions, a new event has been introduced under the name "Dunster Winter Festival," chosen from nearly 150 submissions. The Dunster Winter Festival will continue to offer the experiences that visitors have grown to love.
