Multicultural Singapore summons the best rowers from the whole globe to participate in the celebrated Dragon Boat Race. Each dragon-headed boat is set into motion by twenty skilled competitors rowing synchronically following the rhythm set by a drummer who sits in front of them on the bow.
The direction is controlled by a steerer who stands behind the crew. Dragon boat racing is a traditional Chinese sport and has been held in Singapore since 1978 within Dragon Boat Festival in the Bedok Reservoir Park. Rowers disturb normally calm waters of the Bedok Reservoir every year.
Although dragon boat racing is the climax of Dragon Boat Festival, the festivities also involve traditional ritual performances and traditional Chinese food like dumplings (zhang).
