Ooc Om Boc Festival 2024 in Vietnam

The celebration of Khmer ethnic group dedicated to the deity of moon

Dates: November 14–16, 2024

The Ooc-Om-Bok Festival, central to the Khmer community, is a highlight of winter in Vietnam, attracting many to the Tra Vinh and Soc Trang provinces where the Khmer live. Held annually in the Mekong Delta, this festival honors the moon deity and is deeply rooted in Khmer customs. Taking place at the start of the dry season, just before the harvest, it seeks blessings for a prosperous year ahead, with hopes for a successful harvest, good weather, luck, and happiness.

Traditional Celebrations

The once-flooded paddy fields, where rice was planted, are now dry, with golden rice transforming their appearance. A master of ceremonies leads the event, offering prayers to the moon gods, asking them to accept the gifts and bless the people. Afterward, children gather before the altar, where elders offer them rice and ask about their wishes. Those who respond clearly and politely are believed to have a promising year ahead. The celebration includes feasting, singing, and dancing, and visitors are welcomed with sticky rice. Lanterns are released into the sky or rivers near pagodas, symbolizing the dispelling of darkness and misfortune.

Events & Activities

The festival features beautiful activities like banana tree rafts with offerings, paper lanterns released into the sky, and community feasts. A highlight is the Ngo boat race, where teams row in unison, symbolizing strength, teamwork, and resilience. Cultural performances showcase traditional Khmer music and dance, telling stories of history and beliefs, creating both lively and calm atmospheres. Food lovers can enjoy traditional Khmer dishes, each reflecting the region's rich agricultural heritage and unique flavors made with fresh, local ingredients.
