History of Sydney Hobart Yacht Race
The Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race was originally conceived as a cruise by Peter Luke and a group of friends who formed a club for those who preferred cruising over racing. However, when Captain John Illingworth, a British Royal Navy Officer, suggested turning it into a race, the event was born. Since its first race in 1945, the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race has grown over the years to become one of the world's top three offshore yacht races, attracting maxi yachts from across the globe.
