The Australian Jazz Convention is an annual gathering for musicians and jazz lovers to celebrate their passion for music. While the focus is primarily on traditional or "Dixieland" jazz, the convention embraces a diverse range of genres, including swing, mainstream, bebop, modern, and funk. Bringing together jazz fans and musicians from across the nation, the convention features an impressive lineup of performers, jam sessions, and workshops.

Lineup

The lineup at the Australian Jazz Convention showcases a diverse range of jazz talent across various ensembles. Bands like the New Orleans Dance Orchestra, Tuxedo Jazz Orchestra, and The Phoenix Jazz & Swing Band bring traditional sounds with rich brass sections featuring trumpets, trombones, and clarinets. Vocalists like Bev Baychek, Penny Eames, and Sandra Charon add a soulful touch, while unique acts like Fifth of Nisan and STATE SUMMIT blend instruments like alto sax, guitar, and strings. With groups ranging from small duos to full orchestras, the convention promises an eclectic mix of blues, swing, and classic jazz styles from seasoned and emerging artists alike.

Location

Since 1946, the convention has taken place in various cities and towns throughout Australia. In 2024, the 78th Australian Jazz Convention will be held in Mildura, Victoria. Situated in the northwestern corner of Victoria, Mildura is located along the banks of the Murray River, near the border with New South Wales and close to South Australia.

History of Australian Jazz Convention

While serving in the RAAF in 1944, musician Ade Monsbourgh proposed the idea of a ‘jazz convention’ to his friend C. Ian Turner, intending to include musicians from other states after the war. In 1946, a group of local jazz enthusiasts organized the inaugural Australian Jazz Convention in Melbourne, attracting attendees from both Victoria and other states. Since then, the convention has been held annually between Boxing Day and New Year’s Day at various venues across all states and in the Australian Capital Territory.
