Rambutan Season

If you are in Thailand during this period you have an amazing opportunity to taste rambutan -- one of the fanciest fruits on Earth! Yellowish or greenish skin, covered in hair-like spikes, and firm sweet juicy flesh will not leave you indifferent. Peel off the skin, throw away the seed, and enjoy!

The fruit tastes a lot like lichee or longan, hence rambutan is often called a hairy lichee. It is grown all over Thailand, but the best conditions for this fruit are observed in eastern Rayong province and Surat Thani in the south. At the start of the rainy period, when rambutan becomes in season, a few festivals dedicated to the fruit are held at Surat Thani province.
