Pitaya or Dragon Fruit in Guatemala 2024
These famous magenta-coloured Guatemalan licuados and yoghurt smoothies are made of red dragon fruit
Best time: June–November
The fruit of the night-blooming cactus widespread throughout Guatemala occurs in a great variety of colours both inside and out, but the most common species is red-skinned with a light purplish-red pulp. It is used to make iconic Guatemalan yoghurt smoothies known as licuados, and also in preparation of margaritas—both famous for magenta colouring. The season for red dragon fruit locally named pitaya or pitayana falls on June through November.
