Sanja Matsuri is one of Tokyo's most massive and favourite festivals. It involves carrying 100 portable shrines around the Asakusa's 44 neighborhoods. It usually takes place during the third weekend in May. The festival honours the three founders of Sensoji Temple, who are enshrined near the temple. About 2 million people participate in Sanja Matsuri during three days.
Shrines called mikoshi are paraded through the streets to bring good luck to the residents and businesses of Asakusa. The largest three mikoshi are made at the Asakusa Shrine and are displayed on Sunday. During the festival the neighbourhood has lots of food stalls, music is played with Japanese drums and flutes, games are organized for kids and adults.
