Kate Festival or Lễ hội Katê 2024 in Vietnam
The unique festival of Cham ethnic minority group Kate that expresses their respect to the gods by colourful performance
Dates: October 1–2, 2024
Taking place on October 13-14, the Kate Festival is a distinctive folk celebration of the Cham people, who follow the Brahman religion in Binh Thuan. The festival is dedicated to honoring the gods and praying for favorable weather, abundant crops, harmonious relationships, and the prosperity of all beings. Kate typically starts with ceremonies at temples and towers and concludes with festive activities and Tet celebrations at home. It also serves as a time for Cham people from across the country to reunite with family, friends, and relatives.
The procession of the Goddess Po Sah Inư
During the two days of the festival, a variety of distinctive ceremonies were held at the Po Sah Inu Tower. These included the procession of the genie's costume, the opening of the tower gates, and the bathing of the genie statue. The festival begins in the evening with a solemn dance featuring traditional costumes and ancient Kapo music rhythms in Phan Rang. The following morning, worship rituals are performed to honor the deity. This includes a procession where people carry the Goddess's costume from the ceremony ground to the main tower. The rituals also involve opening the main tower, bathing the Linga-Yoni altar, dressing, and conducting the grand Kate celebration ceremony at the main tower.
Traditional Performances
Visitors are captivated by the vibrant folk art performances at the festival, including traditional instrument play, Cham songs and dances, and the sounds of the Saranai. The festival showcases traditional costumes, cake-making, rice pounding, and the presentation of offerings. The lively atmosphere is enhanced by folk melodies and dances, accompanied by the rhythmic beats of local Gi Nang drums and the resonant tones of Saranai horns, creating an immersive and exciting experience.
Location
The event is typically held in open spaces near the three Champa Towers: Po Nagar, Po Klong Garai, and Po Rome.
