Want to run alongside Bollywood celebrities? Take part in the TATA Mumbai Marathon, one of the largest races in Asia, which attracts about 50,000-60,000 runners on the third Sunday of January. Sponsored by Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), the competition boasts one of the biggest cash prizes in the country, with a prize pool of up to half a million dollars. There are many celebrities, legendary athletes, Indian business tycoons, and show business personalities among participants in the race.
Race Events & Categories
The main event, the marathon, is 26 miles (42 km) long. In addition to the full marathon, the track features a Half Marathon (21.097 km or 13.11 mi), a Dream Run (6 km or 3.72 mi), a Senior Citizens' Run (4.3 km or 2.67 mi), a Champions with Disability (2.4 km or 1.49 mi), and an Open 10K (6.21 mi) run. There is also an Elite Participation category.
Marathon Route
The Mumbai Marathon has a fast and scenic course that starts opposite Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus in Mumbai. The route features many iconic landmarks like Marine Drive, Flora Fountaine, Chowpatty, Mahim Church, the Bandra–Worli Sea Link, Haji Ali, and others. Half-marathon begins near Mahim Causeway, opposite Mahim Bus Depot. Open 10K, Dream Run, Senior Citizens' Run, and Champions with Disability all kick off near Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Railway Terminus.
Participation Fee & Cost
Application fees differ for foreigners and domestic runners. Participation in a marathon costs 3,000 Indian Rupees for Indian residents and $60 for foreigners. Half-marathon costs 2,300 Indian Rupees for Indian residents and $55 for individuals outside of India. Open 10K costs 1800 Indian Rupees and $45, respectively. If you'd like to take part in the Senior Citizen's Run, you need to pay 400 Indian Rupees if you're from India and $15 if you're a foreigner. Dream Run costs 999 Indian Rupees for applicants residing in India and $30 for those outside of the country. Champions with Disability costs 400 Indian Rupees and $15. The cost applies to participants and their attendants.
Schedule
The main marathon and half-marathon both begin in the early morning, with first start waves kicking off at 5 am. The start line closes at 5:30 am. Open 10K starts slightly later at 6 am, with the starting line closing at 6:30 am.
History of the Competition
Mumbai Marathon dates back to 2004 and was inspired by the success of the London marathon. It was then named one of "The Greatest Race on Earth" and sponsored by Standard Chartered Bank. It was awarded the IAAF Gold Label Road Race in 2019, which makes it one of the most prestigious running athletic events in the world that attracts many elite athletes that are capable of setting world records.
