The Boston Marathon is one of the world's oldest and most popular races dating back to the 19th century. It annually draws tens of thousands of devoted participants, and hundreds of thousands of spectators. The route traditionally is overlooked by the city's most outstanding landmarks, including the trail along the Charles River. This internationally famous event takes place on Patriot's Day, celebrated on the third Monday in April.
