Run through the streets of Havana and join the running history
Dates: November 17, 2024
The Marabana Havana Marathon is a highly anticipated sporting event in Cuba. As one of the country’s premier marathons, it offers runners not only a competitive race but also the chance to experience the vibrant culture and rich history of Havana. Whether participants are seasoned athletes or recreational runners, the event promises a unique combination of running through the streets of the city and admiring its iconic landmarks.
Marathon Routes and Distances
The marathon offers several distance options: a full marathon (26 miles, or 42 km), a half-marathon (14 miles, or 22 km), and a 6.2-mile (10 km) race. The routes, as the organizers claim, are certified by the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS). The full marathon requires two laps of the same route, while the half-marathon covers one lap. The course takes runners through some of Havana’s most scenic streets, including the famous Malecón, the historic Old Havana, and important landmarks such as the Revolution Plaza.
Schedule and Program
The marathon is scheduled to start early in the morning with a 6 am kickoff at Sala Ramón Font, located on Avenida Independencia near Plaza de la Revolución. Participants can collect their race bibs at the official hotel, Tryp Melia Habana Libre, from November 13 to 16. According to the organizers, there will be multiple categories for runners based on age groups, ensuring a wide range of participants, from under-30 runners to those aged over 70.
Registration and Fees
Registration is open through the official Marabana website. Entry fees vary depending on the chosen distance: the full marathon costs €105, the half-marathon €85, and both the 10K and 5K races are priced at €75. As the organizers note, runners should sign up early to secure their place, as this international event attracts thousands of participants from both Cuba and abroad.
Location and Infrastructure
The race starts and finishes at the Sala Ramón Font, centrally located in Havana, making it easily accessible for participants. For those staying outside the city, Havana is the largest city in Cuba and well-connected by road and air. Nearby, runners can explore the city’s architectural treasures, including Old Havana, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and iconic landmarks like the Capitolio and the National Museum of Fine Arts. The course, according to organizers, offers frequent “oasis points” with water and medical aid, ensuring the safety and comfort of all participants.
History of Marabana
Marabana has been held annually since 1987 and has grown into one of the most significant athletic events in Cuba. Over the years, it has attracted not only local athletes but also international runners seeking a one-of-a-kind marathon experience. The event has evolved into a symbol of Cuban sportsmanship, and its status as an officially certified international race further cements its importance on the global marathon calendar.
