Bor Sang Umbrella Festival in the vicinity of Chiang Mai is a major highlight of the area as well as a major factor for both tourists and locals to enjoy traditional Thai art and handicrafts. There are not only exhibitions of art and different master classes but also beauty contests and traditional activities.
Festival Program
The villages of Bo Sang and Sankhampaeng are both known for umbrella production, showcasing various stores and workshops dedicated to this craft. During the festival, the artisans get a chance to showcase the entire process of making umbrellas from saa paper crafted from mulberry tree bark. Vendors demonstrate how they create the structure, the paper itself, form the umbrella, and finally, paint vibrant designs.
Besides demonstrations and workshops, you can experience traditional dance and music performances, like the Fon Lep dance and a legendary bike parade. The bike parade involves pageant contestants riding their bicycles through the village while holding umbrellas. The event continues with a stunning float parade and culminates with fireworks.
Dates & Schedule
This vibrant festival takes place annually on the third weekend of January. The festivities usually kick off on Friday morning and span until Sunday evening. The opening ceremony, followed by the bicycle parade and fireworks, usually begins at 5:30 pm on Friday.
