Mamey sapote is a tasty fruit, native to Central America. It tastes a bit like a very sweet pumpkin but has a big black seed inside similar to an avocado. It grows typically to 10-25 cm and weighs from 300 g to 3 kg. The flesh of this fruit is reddish orange, smooth, and sweet. It is a great source of calcium, phosphorus, iron, potassium, vitamins A and C, thiamine, riboflavin, and niacin. It tastes best fresh, but you can also make use of it in a fruit salad, dessert, milkshake, or even in ice cream. It can also be frozen for later use or dried. The harvest season in Florida is May-July, but it is available until October.
