Zafer Bayramı History
The day commemorates Turkey's victory over Greek forces at the Battle of Dumlupinar (August 26-30, 1922), a pivotal event in the Turkish War of Independence, which led to the establishment of the Republic of Turkey under the leadership of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk.
Victory Day Celebration and Parade
Celebrations and parades take place throughout the country. Their goal is to honor the bravery and courage of the heroes who fought for the country's independence. However, the biggest celebration is held in the capital city of Ankara at Anıtkabir, the mausoleum of Atatürk. As this is an official public holiday in Turkey, many shops, business offices, and government buildings will be closed for the day, although some may reopen in the afternoon.
