The Flag Day stems from an ancient tradition. The ships in the harbor of Scheveningen were decorated with flags before they head out for herring fishing. The Flag Day is still recognized as a celebration of the arrival of the Dutch herring to the harbor. The biggest and most authentic celebrations are based at the Port of Scheveningen in The Hague. There are plenty of new herring to feast on, along with concerts and parades, and other performances, and naturally crowds of people.
