Sweet and high in vitamin C, this native South African fruit is favoured by all local residents—even monkeys and baboons!
Best time: April–September
If you're a seasonal fruit chaser, the indigenous Red Milkwood (Mimusops zeyheri) must be on your bucket list. It is loved by everyone for its sweet flavour and high vitamin C content. It grows wild in the woodlands and among the riverine vegetation, as well as on rocky hillsides. The growth area covers the provinces of Limpopo, North West, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, and Free State.
Look for the yellow to orange oval fruit with a pointed tip between April and September. Be ready to encounter competitors, as local animals also like to feast on the fruit, especially monkeys and baboons.
