According to the legend, it all started when a female general Le Chan asked her soldiers to break giant firecrackers in order to scare the enemies away with a loud noise (circa 12 AD). Now this has become a stunning contest in some districts of Hai Duong, not too far from the capital city of Hanoi. The aim is to break the firecracker as loud as one can.
Therefore, contestants try to get the bigger clay firecracker. Some can weigh up to 80 kg and require extra strength from competitor. In 2014 more than 100 competitors, who were judged by 30 experienced referees, took part in the contest.
