Kicksled World Championship 2025 in Norway
A serious winter sports or just a kind of mock costume competition—anyway a delightful pastime for both "kickers" and spectators
Dates: January 25, 2025 | February 8, 2025
The Kicksled World Championship, a cherished winter tradition in Norway, is set to captivate participants and spectators once again in 2025. This annual event celebrates the kicksled—a traditional Scandinavian mode of transportation—and combines competitive races, costumes, and carnival-like festivities. Taking place in two main locations, Geilo and Hurdal, it attracts a wide range of participants, from serious competitors to families seeking fun winter activities.
Geilo (Saturday, January 25, 2025)
Geilo, a well-known winter sports village, will host the Kicksled World Championship on Saturday, January 25, 2025. Geilo transforms into a hub of winter activity with food stalls, grandstands, and lively pedestrian streets. Participants can join various classes, including the Racing Class, the Costume Class for individuals and teams, and a dedicated Children’s Costume Race.
Program
On Friday, February 7, race numbers will be handed out from 12 pm to 8 pm, and late entries will be accepted. The main event kicks off on Saturday, February 8. Starting with handing out race numbers at 9 am, the marketplace opens at 9:30 am, and the official opening of the World Championship Kicksled Downhill 2025 is at 11 am.
The day concludes with an awards ceremony at 3 pm and an Afterparty at Off Pist, a popular venue for celebrating the day's events (20+ age restriction).
Hurdal (February 8, 2025)
Hurdal hosts its version of the championship—VM Spark Utfor—on February 8, 2025. Unlike the flat courses of Geilo, Hurdal features a thrilling downhill race spanning approximately 2.8 miles (4.5 km), starting at Hermods plass and finishing at Hurdal Torg. The event includes a Trim Class for recreational participants and a Competition Class for seasoned racers.
In addition to the races, the event area at Hurdal Torg features a winter market with local vendors. Spectators can enjoy warm food and beverages while watching the action. For those walking from the finish line to the start, organizers recommend allocating about an hour for the journey.
Tickets and Practical Information
Ticket prices vary depending on participation type and include options for the Racing Class, individual and team Costume Classes, and children’s events. Admission to the afterparties may require separate tickets. Parking is available near event venues, though public transport is strongly recommended to reduce environmental impact.
For accommodations, both Geilo and Hurdal offer diverse options, from luxury hotels to cozy cabins. Geilo, in particular, is known for its sustainable tourism practices, ensuring an eco-friendly experience for visitors.
History of Kicksledding
