Rethymno Carnival 2025 in Crete
A glorious event where the whole town becomes one big family
Dates: March 2, 2025
The Rethymno Carnival in Crete is one of Greece’s most celebrated cultural events, combining tradition, creativity, and sheer joy. With origins dating back over a century, the carnival has grown into a massive spectacle that attracts locals and tourists alike. Taking place in the charming city of Rethymno, this vibrant festival culminates in the days leading up to Clean Monday, marking the beginning of Lent in the Greek Orthodox calendar. In 2025, the carnival will run through March 2, transforming the city into a hub of festive activities, parades, and culinary delights.
Carnival Highlights
At the heart of the Rethymno Carnival are its lively parades, elaborate floats, and stunning costumes. Participants, known as "crews," spend months preparing themed performances and colorful outfits to dazzle audiences. The festivities are not limited to the streets; music events, treasure hunts, theatrical performances, and children's activities ensure there’s something for everyone. Visitors can also indulge in Cretan delicacies such as loukoumades (honey-soaked doughnuts), kalitsounia (sweet cheese pies), and raki, a traditional Cretan spirit that flows generously during the celebrations.
The carnival begins in a very traditional way: a town crier tells people where the festival will take place. Then, it's time to party! For visitors, the Rethymno Carnival is an opportunity to immerse themselves in Cretan hospitality and revel in one of the most joyous celebrations in Greece. The carnival is accompanied by plenty of get-togethers, such as "the dance of the teams" and treasure hunts, as well as folk music concerts with a Cretan chorus and orchestra. During the carnival, "kantáda"—carnival music groups walk along the streets and sing, filling the town with merry melodies.
