Señor de los Temblores 2025 in Machu Picchu and Cusco

This festival is a tradition which Peruvians believe to be a way of Christ protecting them from earthquakes

Dates: April 14, 2025

Señor de los Temblores is another religious festival in Cusco. Unlike Inti Raymi, which is rooted in pagan tradition, this one blends pagan and Christian elements. The festival, dedicated to Señor de los Temblores (Lord of the Earthquakes), is celebrated on Holy Monday. During the event, a figure of the Lord is adorned with red flowers, symbolizing the blood of Christ, and carried through the city in a ceremony of celebration and gratitude.

Holy Monday Procession

Every Holy Monday during Holy Week, the image is paraded throughout the Historic Center of Cusco, accompanied by approximately 80,000 devoted followers. This tradition echoes the ancient tradition of parading the mummies of chiefs, priests, and Inca rulers. A key symbol of the celebration is the ñucchu flower. Once used as an offering to Wiracocha, it is now used to create the crown for the Lord of the Earthquakes. As the procession moves through the city, the faithful scatter flowers along the path.

History of Señor de los Temblores

The statue of the Lord of the Earthquakes created around 1570 in Cusco, is credited with halting a devastating earthquake in 1650 and ending a plague in 1720. During the 1985 earthquake, prayers to the image were believed to calm the disaster, strengthening its importance in local faith. Declared Cultural Heritage of Peru in 2007, this figure remains central to Cusco's religious identity.
