Festa di Piedigrotta 2024 in Naples and Pompeii

The folk tunes and floats in Mergellina

Dates: September 7–28, 2024

In early September, Napoli celebrates the festival of the Madonna of Piedigrotta. It goes back to 1800s and combines a song contest, float parades and musical performances during weeks of fun that end with a spectacular fireworks show. The song contest is really popular across Italy and featured some big names in the past. The celebrations usually take place around September 8 and span for several days or even weeks.

Festival Program

A blend between ancient traditions and modern celebrations, Festa di Piedigrotta features numerous religious and cultural events, giving tourists a glimpse into Napoli's past. Piedigrotta started off first as a way for local fisherman to gather and celebrate by illuminating the balconies, signing and departing in elaborate processions. The traditions carried into today, with numerous musical performances and lively outdoor celebrations.

Music Concerts

Throughout the two-week run of the festival, you'll have a chance to witness displays of traditional folk Italian music. Festa di Piedigrotta kicks off on September 7th with Cristina Vetrone playing the organ and singing at 6:30 pm at Napoli Mergellina train station. On September 10th at 9 pm, an annual Serenade to the Madonna concert takes place at the Santa Maria di Piedigrotta church, featuring numerous renowned artists, such as Benedetto Casillo, Mario Maglione, Giovanni D'Angelo, and the Libenti Animo choir.

On September 13th and 14th at 8:30, Villa Communale hosts open-house lessons in tarantella and upbeat folk dances. You'll also have a chance to hear some of the best hits performed by Mimmo Maglionico. As a finishing touch to the festivities, Teatro di San Carlo holds "La funzione del centenario" theatrical-musical performance, which features a choir and various cantata compositions performed by tenor singers. The concert takes place at 8:30 pm.

Other Attractions

Besides music, Naples has a lot more to offer during Festa di Piedigrotta. Every year, the façade of the Piedigrotta church is illuminated, creating a wonderful festive atmosphere. The illumination is followed by the Jamme a truvà a Maria procession from the Torretta church. There is also a customary children's parade with little ones wearing paper dresses hand-made the day before. The festival culminates with an exciting fireworks display at sea on September 16th at 10 pm, which usually lasts 15 minutes.
