Chapulines or Grasshoppers in Mexico 2025
Insect invasion doesn't pose a threat to Mexico, as long as crispy grasshoppers are actually a local favourite snack
Best time: June–October
If you love chips, a bag of crispy chilli-infused grasshoppers is quite a yummy alternative. This salty snack is sold dosed in small bags and may be eaten alone as well as accompany other local foods including guacamole or tostadas. Grasshoppers are available in Mexico year-round, especially in the central valleys of Oaxaca, yet they are the most abundant in rainy summer and fall months—during the season of tall grasses, so much cherished by these insects. Locals nicely name them "chapulines."
