Ski Season in Morocco 2024-2025

What can be better than a day trip to the ski resort to get away from the heat of the city?

Best time: December–March

While Morocco is widely known for its desert landscapes and warm weather, it might surprise many that the country also offers winter sports, including skiing. Nestled in the High Atlas Mountains, Morocco provides an unconventional skiing experience, combining the excitement of snow-covered peaks with the allure of Moroccan culture. For those seeking a different kind of winter getaway, skiing in Morocco presents a unique opportunity to explore this lesser-known aspect of the country.

Best Time to Visit for Skiing

The ski season in Morocco typically runs from December to March, with the peak months being January and February. During this time, snow conditions are usually at their best, especially after fresh snowfall, which is more frequent in mid-winter. However, those looking to avoid crowds may prefer to visit in early December or late March, when the slopes are less busy, though snow conditions can be less reliable. For the best experience, it’s advised to check weather forecasts and conditions ahead of time, as snowfall in Morocco can be unpredictable.

Oukaïmeden

Oukaïmeden is the highest ski resort in Africa, situated around 45 miles (72 km) from Marrakech. Located in the High Atlas Mountains, the resort has been a popular destination for both locals and tourists since its establishment. While it may not compare in size to European resorts, Oukaïmeden offers a unique blend of skiing and Moroccan culture. The resort is relatively small and can be crowded, especially during weekends and school holidays. However, it offers a range of facilities, including hotels, restaurants, and equipment rentals, providing a comfortable stay for visitors. Marrakech’s Menara Airport is the nearest international hub, offering easy access to the resort via a 1.5- to 2-hour drive.

Slopes and Lifts

Oukaïmeden has about 20 km of skiable terrain, with tracks suitable for various skill levels. The resort features several slopes, with the highest starting at an altitude of 10722 feet (3,268 m). While experienced skiers may enjoy the more challenging runs, beginners and children can find easier tracks to practice on. The resort also operates a chairlift, which is one of the highest in Africa, along with several drag lifts.

Prices

Lift passes in Oukaïmeden are relatively affordable compared to European standards. Ski pass prices are €20 for a full day and €15 for a half day.

Equipment Rentals

Oukaïmeden offers several rental shops where visitors can rent skiing equipment. Prices for gear rentals typically range from $20 to $30 per day, depending on the quality and type of equipment. It is advisable to arrive early, as equipment availability can be limited, particularly during busy periods.

Other Ski Resorts

In addition to Oukaïmeden, Morocco offers a few other ski resorts, each with its unique charm. The Michlifen Ski Resort, located near Meknes in the Middle Atlas Mountains, is a small but popular destination known for its scenic slopes and relaxing alpine atmosphere. Further north, the Rif Mountains provide some skiing opportunities in the Rif Gebirge area, though it is less developed compared to the resorts in the Atlas Mountains. While these resorts may be smaller and less developed than Oukaïmeden, they still offer a unique skiing experience in Morocco.
