The seventh largest city in the European Union, Athens, knows how to party

Dates: December 31

New Year's Eve

New Year's Eve in Athens is a giant celebration with street parties everywhere, delicious food, music, and fireworks. Greek New Year traditions include singing carols as well as decorating the entrance to their houses with onions to scare off evil spirits and with pomegranate branches for luck. Another beloved tradition is to watch the fireworks display at midnight.

Thousands of people gather at the pedestrian zone in Thissio with the lit-up Acropolis view as a backdrop. The stage features live acts by some of Greece’s best musicians, singers, actors, DJs, orchestras, and bands. The culmination of the evening with a family-friendly atmosphere is a spectacular fireworks display over the Acropolis.

Another street party takes place at Syntagma Square. The countdown event here also features a lineup of Greek celebrities, DJ sets, and magnificent fireworks. More dazzling displays can be seen at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC), where the night-time celebration features ice skating and live music.

Many revelers also gather at rooftop bars and terraces to drink cocktails and watch the fireworks. Partygoers flock to Agia Irini square with an array of great bars and clubs. Another option is the Gazi area, which also boasts a vibrant NYE atmosphere until the early morning hours.
