Dating back to 1458, the Leipzig Christmas Market, known in German as Leipziger Weihnachtsmarkt, is one of Germany's oldest and biggest Christmas markets. With over 300 stalls for visitors to stroll through, it offers an impeccable holiday atmosphere. Its six areas are installed in chime with the fantastic historical scenery of the city center.
Festive Attractions
The market allows you to indulge in various delicious foods, festive delights, and magical vibes. Numerous vendors sell hand-made souvenirs, Christmas decorations, toys, and other things, perfect for Christmas presents. At Marktplatz, music ensembles, choirs, and local artists bring the cheer with carols, Christmas hits, and holiday music. The program usually begins at 4:30 pm on weekdays and at 1:45 pm and 5:30 pm on weekends. You can also listen to the traditional performance of the trombonists staged on the balcony of the Old Town Hall at 6 pm from Monday to Thursday, at 7 pm on Friday, and at 1 pm and 7 pm on Saturday and Sunday.
Child-friendly Entertainment
Children have their fair share of activities at the market, which makes it a perfect getaway for little ones. A multitude of rides can be found at Augustusplatz, Reich Street, and Marktplatz, including Ferris wheel, carousels, and kid's railway. Children with their parents can make their own Christmas gift in the Gnome workshop, while Fairytale Land puts on large-scale displays of classic stories and riddles. Santa Claus will comfort children at his annual Santa consultations, which take place at 4 pm until 4:45 pm on Thursday and Friday.
Location
All festivities of the Leipzig Christmas Market unfold in the historic old town, with the main area at the Marktplatz near the stunning backdrop of Old Town Hall. Augustusplatz, situated an 8-minute walk away, is home to beloved Christmas attractions like Finnish Village, South Tyrol Village, and Fairytale Forest. Hidden in the nook behind the Old Town Hall, Naschmarkt offers a wide range of hand-crafted goods, food, and beverages. Salzgäßchen Street, Nikolaikirchhof, Grimmaische Street, Reich Street, and Peter Street are all branches of the main Christmas market, welcoming guests of the city and locals to the warm, festive atmosphere.
Weihnachtsmarkt Schedule
From Sunday to Thursday, the market is open from 10 am to 9 pm; on Friday and Saturday, it operates from 10 am to 10 pm. On the first day, an opening ceremony unfolds at 5 pm. On December 22nd, the stalls in other areas are open from 10 am until 8 pm, while stalls at Marktplatz welcome visitors until 9 pm. On the last day of its schedule, this hub of festivities operates only at Marktplatz until 8 pm.
