Scotland loves Christmas! It hosts some of the best Christmas Markets in the UK
Dates: mid-November–early January
When it gets chilly and dark outside, the time comes to turn on Christmas lights and drink some mulled wine. Scottish cities are among the best decorated for the holiday season. Christmas festivities usually begin with St. Andrew's Day on November 30th and last through Christmas Eve or early January. Edinburgh hosts the most popular Christmas Market in Scotland, but there's more to explore in smaller cities.
Edinburgh Christmas Market (November 15, 2024–January 4, 2025)
Located at downtown East Princes Street Gardens and George Street, Edinburgh Christmas Market is the epicenter of holiday activities in the city. It spreads a festive atmosphere and ensures excellent Christmas shopping. You'll find everything, from handmade decorations to warm cashmere scarves. Christmas Markets in Edinburgh are beautiful and romantic! An ice skating rink is a popular place. Crowds also gather near vendors, crafters, and artists. Try traditional European holiday foods, like German bratwurst, schnitzel, and, of course, Glühwein (mulled wine) to keep you warm. Santa Land is located in the East Princes Street Gardens. It is full of rides and entertainment for the whole family. One of the most popular attractions is the Christmas Tree Maze, located in St Andrew Square, featuring 450 illuminated trees. The rides include a reindeer merry-go-round and even a mini-rollercoaster.
Glasgow Christmas Markets (November 9, 2024–January 5, 2025)
Glasgow Christmas Markets, which are among the most popular in Scotland, take place in two locations: St. Enoch Square and George Square. Both squares host cozy wooden chalets with international and Scottish foods, beverages, Christmas gifts, decor, and crafts. Over 50 traders at Glasgow Christmas Markets offer unique items from 32 countries. George Square hosts a large ice skating rink, two beautiful windmill chalets, a Victorian Carousel, Helter Skelter, a 50 ft (15 m) Christmas tree, and various amusement rides for kids. Note that George Square Christmas Market opens on November 23, 2024, and runs through January 5, from 10 am to 10 pm. St. Enoch Square Christmas Market operates from November 9 to December 29 from 9 am to 10 pm.
Oban Winter Festival (November 15–24, 2024)
Oban Winter Festival, which usually takes place in late November, features some nice winter markets to explore. The Distillery Market at Oban Distillery offers food and craft stalls, various entertainment, live music, and kids' activities. The Corran Halls Market is famous for its local farm produce and gastronomic delights, as well as entertainment. Winter Festival Victorian Market in Perle Hotel specializes in crafts and Christmas gifts. In addition to markets, Oban Winter Festival is known for its Reindeer Parade and Christmas light switch-on.
