Tsuchiura National Fireworks Competition 2024 in Japan

Held on the Sakuragawa River, this premier pyrotechnic event marks the grand finale of Japan’s fireworks season. Each fall, the night skies of quaint Tsuchiura burst into brilliant neon colors, transforming the small town into a dazzling spectacle of sound and light. Schedule of Competition

From 6 pm to 8:30 pm, the competition unfolds in three thrilling divisions: Starmines, Size 10 Shells, and Original Displays. Each division boasts its prestigious award. Adding to the excitement are two spectacular highlights: “The Wide Starmines,” which features an awe-inspiring display of 2,000 fireworks in just six minutes, showcasing the grandeur of Tsuchiura’s pyrotechnics. Meanwhile, “The Ending Fireworks” culminates the night with a dazzling array of size seven shells, matching the total number of competitors.

Infrastructure

The event welcomes visitors of all ages, offering flexibility for how you choose to enjoy the show. You can either pre-book ticketed sections for guaranteed prime viewing or follow the majority of attendees who bring their mats and find a spot that suits them. The nearest train station, JR Tsuchiura, is just a 10-15 minute walk from the riverbank. For added convenience, shuttle buses are available for a fee, making it easy to get to the event.

History of Tsuchiura National Fireworks Competition

In 1925, the late Reverend Baiho Akimoto, a Buddhism priest from Jinryuji Temple, initiated a competition with his funds to support businesspeople during a recession, honor fallen Kasumigaura Naval Air Force members, celebrate the autumn harvest, and comfort farmers. Later, Mr. Giichi Kitajima, a pyrotechnist from Tsuchiura and chairman of the Japan Fireworks Industry, continued this tradition. Today, this event is recognized as Japan’s oldest and most esteemed competition of its kind.
