New Year's Eve in Montreal has something for visitors of every age. The massive celebration, which is deemed to be one of the city's most popular annual events, draws over 70,000 revelers, gathering to ring in the New Year in the heart of Old Montreal.

New Year's Eve Celebration in the Old Port

For almost a decade, the Old Port played host to the largest New Year's Eve celebration in Montreal, known as Merry Montreal, which transformed Old Montreal into one large street party zone. The festival, unfortunately, ended in 2023, but the Old Port continues to host other end-of-the-year festivities. The festivities kick off at 7 pm at the Quai Jacques-Cartier in the Old Port, with free entertainment ranging from groovy music and live outdoor performances to a traditional countdown. The event is held as part of the free events of the annual Igloofête and culminates in a spectacular fireworks display at midnight.

Take in the music's rhythm and check out some of Québec’s most famous artists on stage, normally starting at 8 pm and spanning until 2 am. After the concert and a countdown to midnight, celebrate the New Year's arrival with giant fireworks and dance the night away at nearby clubs. Montréal Festif is hosted at the Place Jacques-Cartier from December 29th to December 31st and features its own entertainment program.

NYE Fireworks in Montreal

Many Montreal residents gather on the main squares of Old Montreal to ring in the New Year among fellow revelers. You can head to the Old Port and Jacques Cartier Pier on the Saint Lawrence River, a crowded but picture-perfect area to view bright fireworks along the waterways with plenty of fantastic reflections. The Mount Royal Chalet is also a great spot to view the fireworks as it's located near the summit of Mount Royal, overlooking the entire city. Some locals might also launch fireworks throughout the neighborhood, so be on the lookout for that.
