Located in Wiltshire, at the confluence of the Avon, Nadder, and Bourne rivers, 9 miles (15 km) south of the iconic Stonehenge, Salisbury is seeing tourists all year round. The city is full of historical treasures, such as the 13th-century cathedral and the original copy of the Magna Carta (the Great Charter) document from 1,215 A.D. A wonderful time to explore this cozy medieval city must be Christmas, when Salisbury hosts a holiday event and numerous themed events alike.

Christmas on the Square Activities

The core element of the holiday season in the cathedral city is Salisbury's Christmas on the Square. The Christmas event, taking place at Guidlhall Square, is a great place to take a break and refuel at the food stalls, have fun at the festive pop-up bar, and enjoy the grotto.

In 2024, visitors will enjoy a unique shopping experience with over 30 incredible local crafts vendors offering an array of incredible items—perfect for finding Christmas gifts for family and friends. The Gift Fayre, held under shelter, allows attendees to support local artisans while staying protected from the winter elements.

More Christmas Events and Activities

In addition to the Salisbury Christmas event, you can roam the city's neat streets and take in dazzling holiday lights. If you're into Christmas shopping, head to High Street, Fisherton Street, and Winchester Street, where you can find over 180 independent shops. Also, delight in a special seasonal menu by local pubs, restaurants, and cafes.

Sarum Lights (November 5-9, 2024)

Salisbury Cathedral will host an innovative light and sound show with the premiere of “Time.” The interior and exterior of the Cathedral will be illuminated by dazzling lights, accompanied by sound displays and multiple projection installations.

St Thomas's Christmas Tree Festival (December 5-10, 2024)

St Thomas’s Church's annual Tree Festival is one of the biggest events of its type in the United Kingdom. Up to 100 decorated trees and nativity scenes will help to raise money for nominated charities. In 2024, the local community will be collecting donations for Salisbury Alzheimer’s Support and Salisbury Trust for The Homeless. The festival will feature performances from local choirs, soloists, and bands, while visitors can enjoy seasonal treats and snacks, adding to the festive atmosphere. This Festival will culminate with Midnight Mass on December 24 and the family service on Christmas Day at 10:15 am.
